Flinders Ranges B&B Accommodation, SA
My husband and I are thrity something’s living on a Sheep Station in the Flinders Ranges, South Australia.
We have three children. Our eldest attends boarding school in Adelaide and the other 2 children do their schooling via School of the Air. This in itself entails a great deal of energy, patience, and multi tasking on all of our behalf’s as I am their supervisor/governess!
Station life keeps us very busy, particularly with the ongoing drought. Tourism is beginning to play a greater role in our lives and we’ve expanded this to include our Bed and Breakfast, “Nuccaleena Cottage,” in Orroroo.
Living on a Station provides us with many life skills, I’m not going to lie to you and say that it’s a simple existence, it’s complicated and tests the very strength of our being at times and yet on the other hand it can be very rewarding with no other place we’d rather be! As for most things in life it has it’s ups and downs.
Keith and I are very involved in our community and wear many volunteer hats! We enjoy playing football and netball for Orroroo, which gives us something else to focus on when the drought gets on top of us! Keith, like many outback pastoralists, is not qualified per say but can competently weld a set of yards, build a shed, wire a power point, change the springs in his ute, plumb a drain, shear a sheep, clip our horses hooves, make a leather belt, fix a windmill, navigate a solar power computer system (which i’m sure should require a degree!), class wool and muster sheep on a scarily steep mountain - this outback multi skilling is often hugely underestimated!
I, like Keith, am a Jack of all Trades, Master of none! Cooking takes up a large part of my day and I’ve gradually compiled a fool proof list of recipes that I’ve been able to bluff my way through many a Shearing with and I hope to share these with you on this blog. I constantly struggle with there not being enough hours in a day, have a horrible habit of not being able to say ‘no’, biting off more than I can chew, have been called an ‘obsessive compulsive’ and believe stress builds character
! I love all things crafty (well almost all) and wish I had a smidge of spare time to do more. Nuccaleena Cottage has a few homemade quilts and dolls on display and also stocks my homemade jams and sauces (my favourite one being quince paste!). I have also been studying Accounting very casually and hope to finish before I retire!!!
We started this blog to get with the times I guess! We wanted to create a place where people could come and leave their comments and photos and also find out a bit about us. We aim to add information about the Flinders Ranges, including places to stay, places to eat, places of interest and upcoming events. We also have a couple of guest writers that contribute to the diversity and versitality of the site. Hopefully it will grow into an information blog that people visiting the Flinders Ranges will be able to refer to when planning their travels to our wonderful part of the world!
Thank you for taking the time to find out a little bit about us, please feel free to contribute to this blog or subscribe to our RSS feed - the more the merrier!
