Could not agree with you more about older 4wd vehicles being more challenging, which of course adds to the fun factor. I still have my "back to the future" toyota hilux and couldnt ask for more. Great read :)

I have just harvested a huge crop of quandongs in suburban Adelaide (they must have liked the wet summer and winter). The seed for the tree was from one of Brian Powell's cultivars and the fruit are big. I have just stewe d them up fresh. Have added stewed or tinnned pie apple and made a crumble topping. Yum.

Hi Jo,

Bertha Margaret Blinman is also my childrens Great Grandmother and we would dearly love to find out as much information as we could. I have heard some stories about her from my mother in law and she sounded like she was the salt of the earth.

Looking froward to hearing from anyone who has some information for us all.

Regards C Bolte

Hi,
I just wanted to let everyone know what a fantastic weekend we had at Moolooloo!
Lisa and Keith are the perfect hosts!
While the whole Flinders Ranges is magnificent, I'd have to say Moolooloo is the most amazing location in the region (particularly at the moment, as it's green and lush and has water flowing). Who would have thought in March the countryside would be looking so good!
The property is bursting with history and the family have put together a fantastic information booklet which outlines all the interesting stuff about the property (I'm a bit of a history buff).
The shearing quarters are set up really well - perfect for a large group get together, the Blinman Hut is gorgeous and would be perfect for a romantic get away with a difference, or as a group camping base.
We were lucky enough to take the children to Ferguson's Gap, where they could have a swim in the spectacular rock ponds. I've done a lot of travelling and seen lots of water holes in the Northern Territory, and this is up there with the best of them. Can't believe the Slade family has this spectacular feature in their backyard! :)
We got to see the "gaurdian of the gap" (a face which protrudes from the rock facade at Hannigan's Gap), which was amazing.
Unfortunately we didn't get to see Walter Gills grave (big disappointment!), but it had started to rain and the children were saturated on the back of the ute. I think Keith was getting worried that we'd get rained in. lol.
If you are thinking of a relaxing, or action packed weekend, I'd be heading to Moolooloo. We had such a fantastic time and we'll be heading back again soon!

Hi Lisa and Debbie,
we've got a tree in Orroroo that we often a bucket of fruit off each year. Fresh fruit is fine to cook up, Anna made a pie not that long ago and I didn't see any fruit drying before. Most of mine I just like to stew and serve hot with "lashings of cream and ice cream".

The quote is from Brian Powell the late arid plant legend. I overheard someone ask him once what's better, cream or ice cream and he replied "BOTH".

Hi Debbie,
We prefer to stone and dry the fruit, usually out in the sun on trays (remembering to take them in before dark). Should only take 3 - 4 sunny days. The quandongs have been really big and thick skinned this year and make for a great pie!
I have never cooked the fruit fresh, maybe someone else could advise you on that?! We find that the dried quandong gives a really strong flavour. I hope this helps, enjoy your pie!

Cheers

Hi Peter,
Sorry for the late reply! The rain was amazing and we still have water sitting in the creeks in places. Hoping for another drop this week. Hope you found a creek to wade in, the kids enjoyed swimming in the waterholes here for a good few weeks!
Cheers,
Lisa

Hey Marisol,
I sometimes have that problem too! Pre blind baking is a good idea or alternatively leave it in the oven a little longer (when it's in a pyrex baking dish you can see the bottom browning up). I like to start the oven hot at about 220 degrees celcius for about 15 - 20 mins and then turn it back to about 190 degrees celcius for another half an hour or so, the pie tends to come away from the sides - the pastry appears to shrink. Just being careful to keep an eye on it burning, you could also place a piece of alfoil over the top when you think it is cooked well enough on top. I'm glad to hear you tried out the recipe! We are making it tomorrow night for a group of people we have staying in the Shearer's Quarters - I hope the bottom cooks properly!!
Cheers,
Lisa
