Flinders Ranges B&B Accommodation, SA
A couple of weeks ago we received 20mls of rain which caused some of our bigger creeks to run. At the same time a group of School students and teachers from Victoria were driving along Glass Gorge Road. They approached the Oratunga Creek while it was near it’s peak and instead of applying caution one vehicle proceeded to cross the creek. The vehicle was swept 300m down the creek and tipped on its side. They managed to crawl out of the car and sit on top of it until someone could get down there and throw a rope to them. They were very lucky the car did not tip over again onto it’s roof or one of the children didn’t fall off as it could be a far different story I’m telling you today. The car was all but written off and filled with silt. The teachers did not see the enormity of their mistake and how lucky they were to have escaped so lightly.
Please remember while traveling in the Flinders that our creeks do come down quickly in a storm so please do not attempt to cross it until the level has dropped (which may only take an hour or so). Remember patience is a virtue!
The photo is a picture of the same flood but up the creek a little, taken around the same time the school trip decided to cross it.
